If your old disposable vanished from the shops, you are not imagining it. Single-use vapes were banned across the UK on 1 June 2025. The good news: the flavours, strengths and pocket-sized feel you liked are all still available in a rechargeable, refillable kit that costs less to run.
What changed on 1 June 2025
From 1 June 2025 it became illegal for any UK business to sell or supply single-use (disposable) vapes, in shops and online, whether or not they contain nicotine. The ban was made under the Environmental Protection (Single-Use Vapes) (England) Regulations 2024, with equivalent rules across the other UK nations.
A vape counts as single-use, and is banned, if it has a battery you cannot recharge, or is not refillable, or both.
What's legal now
To be sold legally in the UK today, a vape must be all three of the following:
- Rechargeable: a battery you can recharge.
- Refillable: a tank or pod you refill, or a replaceable pod you can buy separately.
- Fitted with a replaceable coil, where the device uses one, either directly replaceable or inside a replaceable pod.
Crucially, the refills (pods, or e-liquid bottles) must be separately available to buy. A device you cannot get refills or coils for does not qualify as reusable.
The government's stated reasons were environmental, disposables are hard to recycle, their batteries leak chemicals, and they create litter and fire risk at waste sites, alongside a rise in youth vaping. The ban is enforced by Trading Standards, with a £200 fine for a first offence in England, escalating to an unlimited fine and up to two years' imprisonment for continued breaches.
What replaced disposables
Two kinds of kit now do the same job:
- Prefilled ("big puff") pod kits: a rechargeable device with pre-filled, replaceable pods. The closest feel to an old disposable: you swap a pod instead of binning the whole thing. Pods hold up to 2ml, the legal maximum.
- Refillable pod kits: a rechargeable device with a refillable pod you top up from a bottle of e-liquid. A little more involved, and by far the cheapest to run.
Both are fully legal, both are pocket-sized, and both draw the same tight mouth-to-lung way a disposable did.
Finding the same flavour and feel
Three things get you back to what you knew:
- Match the strength. Most disposables were 20mg/ml nicotine salt. Pick a 20mg/ml salt and it will feel familiar. (See our strength guide.)
- Match the draw. Disposables are mouth-to-lung, so choose an MTL pod kit. (See MTL vs DTL.)
- Match the flavour. The popular disposable flavours (the fruits, the menthols, the mixed berries) are all made as nic salts and pods.
Recycling your old kit
Vapes are electrical items and should never go in general waste. As a vape retailer we offer a take-back service for used vapes, pods, coils and batteries, bring them in, or add them to your next order, and we will recycle them properly under WEEE rules.
