Introduction: Why Priming Your Coil Matters

There is one mistake that almost every new vaper makes at least once. They unbox their new device, fill the pod or tank, fire it up straight away, and are immediately hit with a foul, acrid, burnt taste that ruins the experience entirely. That one mistake is failing to prime the coil.

Priming a coil takes under ten minutes and costs nothing. Skipping it can ruin a brand new coil instantly, waste your e-liquid, and put you off vaping altogether — which is the last thing anyone at British Mist wants for you.

Whether you are completely new to vaping or you have been using a device for months and never quite understood what priming actually means, this is the guide you need. We cover everything — what a coil is, why priming works, how to do it correctly for both pod kits and tank devices, how to make your coils last longer, and when it is time to replace them.

What Is a Vape Coil?

Before we get into priming, it helps to understand what a coil actually is and what it does inside your device.

A vape coil is a small component — usually housed inside a replaceable coil head or built directly into a pod — that contains two key elements: a metal heating wire (the coil itself, which gives the component its name) and a cotton wick that wraps around or threads through that wire. When you fire your device, the battery sends power to the wire, which heats up rapidly. That heat vaporises the e-liquid that has been absorbed into the cotton, and that vapour is what you inhale.

The cotton wick is the critical part here. It needs to be thoroughly saturated with e-liquid at all times. When it is, the coil works perfectly. When it runs dry — even for a single puff — the cotton scorches, producing a burnt taste that can permanently damage the coil.

Fixed Coil Pods vs Replaceable Coils

There are two main types of coil setups you will encounter in the UK market:

TypeHow It WorksWhen to ReplaceCommon Devices
Fixed Coil PodThe coil is built into the pod itself. When the coil is spent, you replace the entire pod.Replace the whole pod when performance dropsMany closed-system pod kits
Replaceable CoilThe coil head is separate from the pod or tank. Only the coil is swapped out, not the whole pod.Replace just the coil — more economical and less wasteOpen-system pod kits, sub-ohm tanks

For most beginners using a pod kit with British Mist nic salts, you will likely be dealing with either a fixed coil pod or a simple replaceable coil pod. Both require priming — just in slightly different ways, which we will cover below.

What Is Coil Priming?

Priming is the process of saturating the cotton wick inside your coil with e-liquid before you use it for the first time. That is it. It is not complicated, it does not require any special tools, and it only needs to be done once — the very first time you install a new coil or use a new pod.

Once a coil is in use and your tank or pod is kept topped up with e-liquid, the cotton stays saturated naturally through wicking — the process by which the cotton draws liquid from the surrounding e-liquid reservoir by capillary action. But on a brand new coil, the cotton is completely dry. It has never been touched by e-liquid. Firing it in that state is the equivalent of trying to fry food in a pan with no oil — things burn instantly.

What Happens If You Skip Priming?

  • The dry cotton scorches the moment the coil fires, producing a harsh, burnt taste
  • The burnt cotton permanently contaminates the coil — the taste does not go away
  • The coil is effectively ruined and needs to be replaced immediately
  • Your e-liquid is wasted
  • You are left with a poor first impression of what should be an enjoyable experience

British Mist says: Priming a coil correctly is the single most impactful thing you can do to improve your vaping experience. It takes less time than making a cup of tea and it protects both your coil and your e-liquid.

How to Prime a Coil in a Tank (Step-by-Step)

This method applies to any device that uses a replaceable coil head — whether that is a pod kit with swappable coils or a traditional tank setup. Take your time with each step and do not rush the waiting period.

Step 1: Inspect the New Coil

Before you do anything, look at the new coil. You will see small holes or ports on the side of the coil head — usually two to four of them. Through these ports you can see the white cotton wick inside. These are the wicking ports, and they are where you will apply your e-liquid to begin the priming process.

Step 2: Drip E-Liquid Directly onto the Cotton

Using your e-liquid bottle, carefully drip three to four drops of e-liquid directly onto each of the wicking ports. You will see the white cotton darken as it absorbs the liquid — this is exactly what you want. If there is any cotton visible on the top of the coil, add two to three drops there as well. Do not overdo this — you want the cotton damp, not flooded. If liquid starts dripping out freely, you have gone too far.

Step 3: Install the Coil into the Device

Once the cotton is visibly damp at each port, screw or push the coil into your tank or pod. Hand-tight is sufficient — do not overtighten, as this can damage the coil’s threading or seal.

Step 4: Fill the Tank or Pod

Fill your tank or pod with e-liquid, making sure the level is high enough to cover the wicking ports on the coil. This is important — if the wicking ports are not submerged in e-liquid, the cotton cannot wick properly and you risk a dry hit even after priming. Always use an e-liquid that is appropriate for your device. Most pod kits designed for nic salts work best with a 50/50 VG/PG ratio.

Step 5: Leave It to Soak — Do Not Skip This

This is the step most people rush, and the most common cause of burnt coils even after priming. Set the device down and leave it for a minimum of ten minutes. Fifteen minutes is better. This allows the e-liquid to fully saturate the inner cotton layers of the coil — not just the outer surface. The outer cotton soaks through quickly, but the inner core takes time. Skip this wait and even a “primed” coil can still burn on the first few puffs.

Step 6: Take Primer Puffs (Without Firing)

Before you press the fire button for the first time, take three to four draws from the mouthpiece without activating the battery — simply inhale as if you were vaping, but do not press the button. This creates suction that actively pulls e-liquid through the cotton from the reservoir, speeding up the saturation process and helping to reach the inner cotton layers that gravity alone may not fully reach. This is sometimes called the vacuum trick and it genuinely makes a difference.

Step 7: Start Low and Work Up

When you are ready to fire for the first time, start at the lowest wattage your device supports — or the lowest end of the coil’s recommended wattage range, which is usually printed on the side of the coil. Take five to six gentle puffs at that low wattage. Then increase by five watts and repeat. Work up gradually to your preferred wattage over the first fifteen to twenty puffs. This process beds the cotton in and ensures even saturation throughout, preventing any dry spots from scorching under high heat.

How to Prime a Pod Kit (The Simpler Method)

If you are using a pod kit — which is the most popular style of device for nic salt vapers in the UK — the priming process is simpler. Most pod kits use either a fixed coil pod or a pod with a push-in replaceable coil, and the method is slightly different from a traditional tank setup.

Priming a Fixed Coil Pod

  1. Fill the pod with your chosen e-liquid through the fill port, making sure not to overfill. Leave a small air gap at the top.
  2. Replace the fill port cap securely.
  3. Leave the filled pod to sit upright for five to eight minutes. With fixed coil pods, the cotton is already in contact with the e-liquid reservoir, so the saturation time is shorter than with a separate coil head.
  4. Take three to four primer puffs without activating the battery, drawing gently through the mouthpiece to encourage liquid through the cotton.
  5. Insert the pod into the device and start vaping at a low draw intensity, building up gradually over the first ten puffs.

Priming a Pod with a Replaceable Coil

  1. Remove the old coil from the pod and discard it.
  2. With the new coil, drip two to three drops of e-liquid directly onto the visible cotton through the wicking ports.
  3. Press or screw the new coil into the pod.
  4. Fill the pod with e-liquid, covering the wicking ports fully.
  5. Leave to soak for a minimum of ten minutes.
  6. Take three to four dry primer puffs without the battery active.
  7. Reinsert into the device and begin vaping gently, increasing intensity over the first ten to fifteen puffs.

British Mist Tip: With pod kits and nic salts, there is no need to fire at the “lowest wattage” in the same way as a high-powered mod — your device likely has a fixed output. Just vape gently and at a normal pace for the first ten puffs rather than taking long, hard draws.

10 Key Facts About Coil and Pod Priming

  1. Priming only needs to be done once — the very first time a new coil or pod is used
  2. The cotton wick inside a new coil is completely dry and will burn instantly if fired without priming
  3. A burnt coil cannot be repaired — once the cotton is scorched, the coil must be replaced
  4. The minimum recommended soak time for most coils is ten minutes; fifteen is safer
  5. Fixed coil pods require a shorter soak time of five to eight minutes as the cotton sits closer to the e-liquid reservoir
  6. Dry primer puffs — inhaling without pressing the fire button — help pull e-liquid into the inner cotton layers more quickly
  7. Sweet, dessert, and candy-flavoured e-liquids cause coil gunk to build up faster than fruit or menthol flavours
  8. Keeping your tank or pod above half full at all times prevents dry wicking during normal use
  9. Chain vaping — taking rapid, repeated puffs — prevents the wick from re-saturating between draws and causes dry hits
  10. A coil in a pod kit used daily typically lasts one to two weeks; higher wattage sub-ohm coils may last only a few days

The Do’s and Don’ts of Coil and Pod Priming

Do’s

  • Do drip e-liquid directly onto the wicking ports before installing a replaceable coil — this gives the inner cotton a head start on saturation
  • Do wait the full soak time after filling — ten minutes is the minimum, fifteen is better for most coils
  • Do take dry primer puffs before firing — three to four gentle draws without the battery active helps pull liquid into the cotton faster
  • Do start at a low wattage for the first puffs — let the coil bed in gradually before increasing power
  • Do keep your tank or pod topped up — the wicking ports must always be submerged in e-liquid during normal use to prevent dry hits
  • Do use the right e-liquid for your device — pod kits and MTL devices work best with 50/50 VG/PG e-liquids; high-VG liquids are too thick to wick efficiently in small coils
  • Do replace your coil as soon as performance drops — a degraded coil affects flavour, vapour production, and your overall experience
  • Do keep spare coils in stock — a burnt coil cannot be saved, and running out of replacements at the wrong moment is easily avoided

Don’ts

  • Don’t fire a brand new coil without priming — even one puff on a dry coil can ruin it permanently
  • Don’t rush the soak time — the most common cause of a burnt taste on a new coil is simply not waiting long enough
  • Don’t over-prime — flooding the coil with too much e-liquid causes gur
